The Shandrani Resort & Spa’s in-house water bottling initiative has received a very positive response from guests since its introduction in July 2011.

Every year, more than 350,000 bottles of water are consumed by guests at the hotel. In a major effort to preserve the environment, the Shandrani Resort & Spa has imported a water filtering machine to effectively purify water which is then served sparkling or flat in reusable glass bottles.

The water filtering machine at the Shandrani does the same thing with an activated carbon filter that purifies and cleans the water, making it crystal-clear and removing odours and other impurities. It also uses a natural refrigerant gas with zero impact on global warming.

The benefits and values of the process are obvious with a drastic reduction of carbon dioxide released through transportation of stocks of bottled water by truck from the centre of the island whilst saving on storage, refrigeration and handling.

But the most obvious benefit is achieved through minimising the dumping of plastic. The use of plastic bottles clearly has a negative impact on the environment as this material takes years to break down.

Commenting on the project, General Manager Jean-Louis Pismont said, “Environmental responsibility is everyone’s concern and we were looking for an efficient solution that didn’t require heavy investment. Hotels usually generate significant amounts of waste and we have the duty to find ways to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment”.
