Situé au nord-ouest de l’île Maurice, Le Canonnier est un hôtel 4 étoiles appartenant au groupe Beachcomber. L’hôtel tire son nom du lieudit « Pointe aux Canonniers », nom donné au promontoire sur lequel un fort français fut construit dans les années 1750. Des canonniers - des hommes dont la tâche était de faire fonctionner les canons - y étaient alors employés.
Le fort faisait partie du système défensif de l’île de France pour contrer les attaques des anglais et autres puissances européennes qui cherchaient alors à étendre leur influence dans l’océan Indien. Briques à feu, chaux, basalte (pierre volcanique), bois et métal étaient les matériaux de construction de prédilection de l’époque.
Aujourd’hui, certains canons, impeccablement préservés, ont été disposés de part et d’autre des terrasses du Navigator, restaurant gastronomique de l’hôtel qui s’ouvre sur les îles du nord.
Unique en son genre, l’architecture du Canonnier intègre d’autres vestiges du patrimoine militaire de l’île Maurice. Les somptueux jardins abritent une ancienne poudrière construite en 1754. Ce bâtiment aux murs épais servait à stocker la poudre à canon. A la tour défensive construite en 1805 vint se greffer un phare en 1855. Aujourd’hui cette superbe structure a été convertie pour accueillir le kids club du Canonnier. C’est dans ce cadre magique que des activités multiples sont organisées chaque jour pour les enfants de 3 à 12 ans sous l’œil vigilant du personnel qualifié.
Construit entre les branches d’un banian bicentenaire, le centre de bien-être du Canonnier occupe l’ancien emplacement d’un réservoir pouvant contenir 3000 litres d’eau. Aujourd’hui, la structure a presque entièrement disparu sous les racines du banian, les lianes et autres plantes tropicales.
Témoins silencieux d’un passé prestigieux, ces structures anciennes ont trouvé, au sein de l’hôtel un nouveau souffle. Ils confèrent au site du Canonnier une atmosphère authentique, inimitable.
