Beachcomber is enhancing and adding a new dimension to its internal training policy. With a long tradition of in-service training, the Group has inaugurated the new premises of the Beachcomber Training Academy (BTA) at Trou aux Biches on Thursday 19 May. This inauguration also marked the launch of the Ecole de Partage (School of Sharing). This is an unprecedented initiative in Mauritius to promote mentoring within the Group. The Minister of Education and Human Resources, Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun was the guest of honour of the event and other distinguished guests included the Minister of Labour, Soodesh Callichurn.

Located on the Coastal Road at Trou aux Biches, the new Beachcomber Training Academy is a modern and pleasant facility with spacious lecture rooms. It offers courses designed for staff members of all levels. Different modules have been developed to meet the needs of hotel operations, management and Head Office staff. The aim is to continue nurturing the talent and skills of the 5,000 employees, who are the driving force behind Beachcomber’s success.

The launch of the Group’s Ecole de Partage is also part of this effort. This innovative initiative promotes an interactive approach between senior staff (30 to 40-year career with the group) and the younger generation; it is a first in the business landscape of Mauritius and is undoubtedly a major innovation by the Group in the field of training.

It all started in August 2015 with the Beachcomber Au Coeur des Valeurs exercise, during which 500 employees from the Group’s hotels and other business units have taken part in workshops and individual interviews to reflect on the Beachcomber values. A large majority have wished for better communication and stronger cohesion between senior and new employees.

Ecole de Partage is in line with these expectations. It is based on an observation: the know-how and soft skills of senior staff members within the company which contribute to the strength of the Group and are essential components of its heritage. Transferring this capital is of paramount importance to ensure sustainable growth of the organisation.

The philosophy of Ecole de Partage is to recognise the importance of senior staff’s soft skills and promote the transfer of this wealth of knowledge to the younger generation within the Group. As its name suggests, Ecole de Partage is based on sharing. It is a forum of exchange, dialogue and interaction between senior and younger staff members about the organisation, work, and values. In addition to the transfer of soft skills, this initiative encourages exchange between generations beyond the context of hotel operations.

Ecole de Partage will have a team of 12 facilitators. The first cohort of learners will comprise 150 employees and each training session will run over one month. The curriculum has already been set. During the training, senior staff will share the landmarks in Beachcomber’s history with their younger colleagues; they will talk about the values that have guided the men and women within the Group since 1952.
